Overview:
In today’s unprecedented time, every coach/leader works in a complex, dynamic, and ever-changing world. All of these demand them to think systemically. As quoted by Hofkirchner & Rousseau (2015) “The crisis we face are systemic in nature. To overcome those crises we need to understand how the system works. To arrive at such an understanding we need to think systematically.” There is a need for leaders and coaches to think differently and systemically. Thus, the 5 ways of systemic thinking can help leaders/coaches to apply these 5 approaches in their coaching space to get the best outcomes.
If you’re a professional coach or a leader wanting to know how systemic thinking can help you read along and watch the webinar.
You will learn:
- A high-level overview of different systems theories
- An understanding of how each way of thinking shows up in different practical approaches to coaching
Key Takeaways
What is systemic thinking?
Systemic thinking is about taking a holistic approach that views the team and its environment as interconnected and complex and acknowledges, illuminates and releases the system dynamics so each element can function with ease.
How is it related to systemic coaching?
The term ‘systemic coaching’ is becoming increasingly popular, but often coaches lack a detailed explanation of how the term is being used. Whittington (2012) defines systemic coaching as “that which acknowledges, illuminates and releases the system dynamics so that each element can function with ease.” Systemic coaching is bringing a radically different approach to the system; an approach in which the coach raises awareness around the invisible system dynamics that lies beyond the coachees’ conscious awareness.
The 5 system theories can give coaches a broader approach of thinking of what they are doing and how their work can evolve to become more relevant and effective. The coaches can identify their own particular philosophy as to what it means to be a systemic coach and address the coachees more systematically.
Here’s an overview of 5 approaches to systemic thinking. Based on the coach’s needs, any of these lenses can be used to make coaching effective:
- Linear systemic
- Non-linear systemic
- Collaborative systemic
- Complex systemic
- Linear systemic
